Robotic Scientist to Replace Grad Students
Robotics Posted by Pennywise on Wednesday January 14, @11:03PM

It's all over the news, but in case you've missed it Ross King and his colleagues at the University of Wales have created a "robot scientist" that proposes to automate the development of biochemistry. The robot incorporates AI that can generate hypotheses from what it knows about biochemistry, and design experiments to test them. So far the robot has only rediscovered the role of genes in baker'e yeast that scientists already knew about, but in the future the robot may discover the roles of other genes or design new drugs.

"This research is very exciting as we have handed control of the experiment over to the robot," said Prof King.
"There is no human intellectual input in the design of the experiments or the interpretation of the data.
"There is increasing need for automation in the biological sciences and, although the problems we set for the robot were relatively simple, we have shown that it could be used to help solve real world problems."
