from the Dogbert dept. A research study suggests that recognition of sarcasm involves an intricate sequence of events. The brain's language areas interpret the literal meaning of a statement, the right hemisphere and frontal lobes process the emotional context, while the prefrontal cortex integrates the two. "Decision making, emotional processing, empathy, and theory of mind all appear to be involved in understanding sarcasm," said lead researcher Simone Shamay-Tsoory, a neuropsychologist at the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, Israel. Of the participants involved, 25 had damage to their prefontal lobes and 16 had damage in the posterior lobes. There were 17 healthy controls. http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn7411 < | >
