Shaveta Bansal - All Headline News Contributor Tokyo, Japan (AHN) - Researchers at the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR) and Honda Research Institute Japan Co. have developed an interface that will help robots to decode and then simulate human brain activities.
The invention is based on an article called "Decoding the perceptual and subjective contents of the human brain," published by Dr. Yukiyasu Kamitani, a researcher at ATR, in Nature Neuroscience, says TechWeb News. Realizing the theory into practical ATR and HRI developed a "Brain Machine Interface" that works by mapping brain activities and tracking hemodynamic response via a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine as a subject moving his or her fingers. Then a computer program extracts and decodes the specific signals that generate the hand movements and transfers the information to a hand-shaped robot, which then simulates the movement within seconds, says TechWeb news. Researchers have reported an 85 percent accuracy rate so far. The investigators hope that the technology can be upgraded to be further used for assisting people with disabilities, improving car safety and also typing.
