Why men at war will pull together

[article] What brings out the best in men? According to a new study, it's having a common enemy. After devising an economics game, psychologists requested that groups of volunteers choose whether to keep money for themselves or invest in a group fund. The males in the study were more generous to groupmates if they thought that other groups were competing with them. The results, announced at the British Association's Science Festival, may aid in explaining the evolutionary roots of men's interest and behavior in war. "One of the things that distances us from many other species is that males actually co-operate with each other," said Professor Mark van Vugt, of the University of Kent.

An interesting post and article -- thanks for the discussion opportunity. I couldn't help but wonder as I read this -- what about engineering more settings where men come together over the common enemy of "war" itself? It seems to me that such brilliance would generate a terrific peace plan that could become as popular and studied as the constant books out with war plans. The thought hit me as I read this post. What do you think?

Would help if those caught-up in the respective historical grudges between their states, ethnicities, or religions around the globe could get around to doing that before the potable water and other dwindling resources start providing more incentives for resurrecting their unfinished resentments.

Very true. Necessity will always be the primary mover of behavior.
